Good Faith Estimate

Under Federal law, health care providers, including psychologists, must give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical and mental health services.

  • You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) explaining how much your care will cost.
  • You can ask for a GFE before you schedule a service.
  • If you schedule a service at least 3 business days in advance, you will receive a written estimate within 1 business day. If you schedule at least 10 business days in advance, you will receive it within 3 business days.
  • Your GFE will include the expected cost of services that are reasonably anticipated. It may not include things that could arise unexpectedly during treatment.
  • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, for any specific procedure or service you undertake and for which you are billed, you can dispute the bill.
